It’s great to see that the superb Wide Open Walls project is continuing in 2012 – and that the quality of the artwork remains at a ridiculously high standard. Lawrence Williams, magus of Mandina and Makasutu and a keen artist himself, had been working with local artists on a project called Bushdwellers for a number of years and had always wanted to expand the project into something more, something lasting that could both function as a valid art installation in itself and at the same time promote The Gambia as a tourist destination. He spoke to street artist Eelus one night in 2010 and all of a sudden the project was go, and it’s growing from strength to strength with each passing year. David Shillinglaw has recently returned from the project where he created some beautiful paintings, some of which he’s agreed to let us share below. Keep up with the project on the WoW Facebook page, and if you’re in The Gambia, do try and get upriver to see the project – it’s really a sight to behold.
